2020 Fall Membership Meeting Committee Recap

Posted By Adriana Vargas, National Fenestration Rating Council, Wednesday, October 28, 2020

Research and Technology Committee Report

  • * The Board approved the Non-Planar Skylight Energy Ratings RFP. This RFP will assist with developing procedures to rate non-planar products using computer simulation.

  •

Technical Committee Report

  • * Volunteers are needed, please contact the staff liaison.

  • Vice-chair for the Condensation Resistance SC (Chair: Steve Harp; Staff liaison: Dennis Anderson)

  • * The following ballots were approved, but are held in abeyance until the next authorized ANSI review and approval and will be implemented upon publication:

  • ANSI/NFRC 100 Spandrel ballot to determine U-factor ratings for spandrel products.

  • ANSI/NFRC 200 Spandrel ballot to determine SHGC and VT ratings for spandrel products.

  • These two spandrel ballots require the updating and approval of the NFRC simulation manual to include modeling procedures for spandrel products.

  • ANSI/NFRC 500 Refinement ballot which clarifies language for the new Condensation Index (CI) procedure.

  • This ballot clarifies the following: the center-of-glass CI determination is the coldest temperature between dividers or glass when applicable; that blinds or shades-between-the-glass can be simulated for CI for inside the glazing gap only; and aligns the CI physical test procedure for placement of divider-edge thermocouples to match the simulation procedure and figures.

  • * Due to the complications to use updates of WINDOW and THERM software (version 7.7 or greater), the Board approved moving the sunset date for WINDOW/THERM version 7.4 to June 30, 2021.

  • The WINDOW/THERM Approval task group is developing an RFP to test version 7.8 of the WINDOW and THERM software.

  • * Information:

  • Kevin Vilhauer of Katerra, has taken on the role of Vice Chair of the Technical Committee.

  • The Condensation Index software tool will go through the Software Approval process. This software will assist simulators with obtaining temperatures from THERM for use with the CI rating.

Ratings Committee Report

  • * The Board approved the reaffirmation of the NFRC 700 and NFRC 705 program documents as 2021 documents with implementation upon publication.

  •

  • By the end of the year, NFRC program documents, such as the NFRC 701, 702, etc., shall be approved as 2021 documents. All 2021 program documents shall be published in January of 2021.

ANS Standards Committee Report

  • * The Board approved the ANS Committees recommendation to move ANSI/NFRC documents to a Continuous Maintenance review cycle

  • Staff has been directed to update documents and submit documentation to ANSI/ANAB for processing. NFRC anticipates moving to the continuous maintenance process by mid-2021.
